We originally got this recipe from the Canadian Discovery Channel and we have photocopied and given it out so many times that we
finally decided to put it on our web site.
Please be careful however to use only a three percent solution of hydrogen peroxide because higher concentrations can be dangerous.
Anyway just how do you fully get rid of the smell of skunk spray off your pet or yourself for that matter? Many people are
under the impression that washing with tomato juice will eliminate this terrible odor but that is just a myth. Instead, all
that this will do is add the smell of the tomato juice to the smell of the skunk spray, which is chemically known as butenyl.
The recipe is as follows:
- 1 liter of three percent hydrogen peroxide. (Please read the warnings on the bottle re eyes and clothes.)
- 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
- A dash of dishwashing detergent.
Just mix them all together and wash the areas that were sprayed. The detergent will bring the butenyl to the
surface and the other two chemicals will react with the smell and destroy it. Then wash with normal soap and
water to get rid the chemicals.
Repeat once if you didn't get all of the smell off the first time.
